For most of its history, the courthouse square in Scottsboro has run on daytime hours. Payne's Sandwich Shop & Soda Fountain has been open for more than 150 years, its signature item is the red slaw hot dog, and it closes at 6 pm. McCutchen's Magnolia House is known for the fried green tomatoes on Alabama Tourism's "100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama" list, and Alabama Tourism lists it as a lunch-only spot, 11 am to 2 pm.
Two openings in 2026 changed what a night downtown can look like. Now there's somewhere to go after dinner. That second stop keeps a narrow schedule, though: Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Planning a good evening on the square mostly means picking the right night.
Where the Clock Stops on Each Night
Here's when the main downtown food and drink spots close on each night, based on the hours each business or a current listing publishes.
| Venue | Sun | Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu–Fri | Sat |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Payne's Soda Fountain | Closed | 6 pm | 6 pm | 6 pm | 6 pm | 6 pm |
| McCutchen's Magnolia House | 2 pm | 2 pm | 2 pm | 2 pm | 2 pm | 2 pm |
| Tokyo Japan | Closed | 9 pm | 9 pm | 9 pm | 9 pm | 9 pm |
| Warehouse 207 | Closed | Closed | 10 pm | 10 pm | 10 pm | 10 pm |
| Dominic's on the Square | Closed | Closed | Closed | 7 pm | 9 pm | 9 pm |
| The Vault on Laurel | Closed | Closed | 6 pm | 6 pm | 10 pm | 10 pm |
Read down the columns. On Monday, the only place in this group still serving after 6 pm is Tokyo Japan. On Tuesday and Wednesday you can get dinner at Warehouse 207 or Tokyo Japan, but nothing on the list stays open later than they do. From Thursday through Saturday, Dominic's runs until 9 and The Vault until 10, so dinner can turn into a full evening.
A few of these hours deserve a quick check before you go. Dominic's posts two schedules. Its homepage, used in the table, lists Wednesday 4 to 7 pm, Thursday and Friday 4 to 9 pm, and Saturday 2 to 9 pm. Its events page lists Wednesday and Thursday 11 am to 7 pm and Friday and Saturday 10 am to 8 pm. Both say it's closed Sunday through Tuesday, and both have it open on Thursday through Saturday evenings. Warehouse 207's own website shows only the current day's hours, so its weekly schedule comes from a third-party listing.
What Opened in 2026, and Why Thursday Matters
Dominic's on the Square opened January 30 at 220 S. Broad St., according to the Jackson County Sentinel. Owner Lisa Bennett set it up as a wine lounge with a small market of curated goods. The list has more than 90 wines, over 50 of them by the glass. There are flights of whites, reds and a sweet trio, plus small plates like charcuterie, olives and hummus to go with them. Main Street Scottsboro says the concept comes from Bennett's Italian heritage and her travels in Europe, and Dominic's won a 2026 Best of Alabama award.
The Vault on Laurel opened May 15 at 230 W. Laurel St., a block off Broad. Owners Aimee and John Paul Lambert already ran a location in Stevenson, and the Scottsboro lounge pairs cigars with bourbon, scotch and beer. It also books private whiskey-and-cigar tastings and gatherings by reservation. When it opened, the Lamberts told the Sentinel they hoped to add beginner cigar classes later, and the paper's report gave no dates.
Neither place is built for a full dinner. Dominic's describes its food as simple, shareable plates meant to go with the wine. So these two work best alongside a downtown dinner spot. Warehouse 207, which Main Street Scottsboro credits with drawing food bloggers and visitors from across the region, is open until 10 every night from Tuesday through Saturday. That gives you dinner on any of those five nights. Only Thursday through Saturday give you somewhere to go next.
A Thursday-to-Saturday Evening, in Order
Using the published hours, here's a sequence that fits on any of those three nights:
- Late afternoon at Payne's, before 6. Get the chocolate shake Main Street Scottsboro featured this summer, or a float. After 6, the soda fountain is closed.
- A flight at Dominic's. On Thursday and Friday, the homepage hours start at 4 pm, so it's easy to fit in before dinner. On Saturday it opens at 2.
- Dinner at Warehouse 207 or Tokyo Japan. Main Street Scottsboro picked Warehouse 207's mojito as one of its summer drinks downtown. Tokyo Japan serves hibachi and sushi and closes at 9.
- Finish at The Vault. It's the last place in this group to close on these nights, at 10 pm.
The order also works the other way. Start with dinner, then walk to Dominic's for a glass before its 9 pm close, which leaves time for a pour at The Vault before 10.
On Wednesday, this route mostly doesn't work. Dominic's closes at 7 on its homepage schedule and The Vault at 6, so after dinner nothing in this group is still open besides the restaurants themselves.
The Fall Calendar Lands on Saturdays
Here's what makes the Thursday-through-Saturday window useful this season. Every downtown evening event on Main Street Scottsboro's fall calendar falls on a Saturday, the night Dominic's, The Vault and Warehouse 207 all stay open late.
- Saturday, October 10: The Scottsboro BBQ Festival runs from 9 am to 5 pm, with live entertainment. It ends just as Dominic's Saturday afternoon is underway and hours before The Vault closes.
- Saturday, October 24: Dominic's hosts Bingo, Broomsticks & Bordeaux from noon to 3 pm. Tickets are $25 and include bingo and a Pink Witch Walk around the square. Proceeds go to the local Beauty and the Beast Fund, which helps people in the community affected by breast cancer.
- Saturday, October 31: Halloween on the Square runs from 5:30 to 8 pm, with a trunk-or-treat and food trucks.
- Saturday, November 14: The Classic Cruiserz Cruise-In runs from 2 to 7 pm, with a mini People's Choice car show at 4.
- Saturday, December 5: Jingle Bell Square runs from 9 am to 2 pm, and the Jingle Bell Trail's opening night starts at 5 pm. The trail's trees stay up downtown from November 28 through January 1.
The cruise-in shows how well this lines up. It ends at 7 pm, when Warehouse 207 has three hours left, Dominic's two and The Vault three. On December 5, the daytime market ends three hours before the trail's opening night begins, and on its homepage schedule Dominic's is open straight through that gap.
There's one exception to the Saturday pattern, and it's on a night the table marks as closed. Dominic's has a Trivia Night on Tuesday, October 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The questions are about Jackson County. It's a one-off event on a regular closed night, so it's a good reason to check Dominic's events page before writing off a weeknight. That page has also hosted Gallery Night evenings, most recently photographer Matt Crowell's landscapes on October 2.
What's Still Missing From the Evening
Some gaps are worth knowing about when you plan. We couldn't find a published fall schedule of live music, trivia or dinner specials at Warehouse 207. Its site asks visitors to sign up for updates on specials and events instead. The Art Society of Jackson County's 2026 Night Market lineup ended August 15, and we found no dates for later in the year. Dominic's announced Sparkling Saturdays starting at 10 am in April, but its current homepage hours start Saturday service at 2 pm. Confirm before you plan a Saturday morning around it.
So for now, the square's evening comes from a handful of businesses that keep late hours on the same three nights. If you're going this fall, plan on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, and Saturday is the night that comes with an event attached.
